These gorgeous Victorian art glass pickle castors was made by the Mount Washington Glass Company of New Bedford, Massachusetts, circa 1880s-1890s. The company originated in Boston in 1837 as the New Bedford Glass Works. It was purchased by W.L. Libbey in 1870 and moved to New Bedford, when the company was renamed the Mount Washington Glass Works. In 1876 it was reorganized and renamed the Mount Washington Glass Company, which was its name until 1894, when it merged with the Pairpoint Mfg. Company, a renown maker of silver.
Frederick Shirley formulated Crown Milano for Mt. Washington Glass Company in 1884. The opaque glass has a pale biscuit color and a satin finish.

Crown Milano Art Glass Pickle Castor with Pairpoint Silver Plated Holder
Middle: This is a Mount Washington Crown Milano pickle castor done in a hobnail floral design and features a spider mum decoration on the pickle castor insert. This insert is secured in an equally beautiful silverplated holder that features fruit and leaves and is marked by its maker, ‘Pairpoint Manufacturing Company’. This holder stands 8 1/2″high, at the widest is 5″ and the height of just the insert with the silverplated lid on measures 6″ high. This is a beautiful Victorian pickle castor and the contrast of the darker colored background against the lighter colors of the enameled Mum flowers really brings the flower to life and to one’s attention.
Antique Mt Washington Crown Milano Pickle Castor – Pairpoint Holder
Right: Mount Washington Crown Milano pickle castor insert that features a detailed floral enameled scene and is secure and displayed in an equally beautiful footed silverplated signed Pairpoint Manufacturing Company holder which is complete with the silverplated pickle tongs and silverplated lid. The enameled scene on this crown Milano insert is referenced as the Caladium Leaf design or pattern.
