This is an exceptional needlework and sewing sampler that features a cross stitch artwork sampler with the alphabet and numbers featured, along with a poem and is dated 1817. Note how both the lower- and upper-case letters are shown along with two different styles done with the letters in the upper-case design. There is a poem in the center that reads.
While rosy cheeks thy bloom confess
Any youth thy bosom warms
Let virtue guide and knowledge dress
Thy mind with brighter charms.
This sampler is then identified by the artist –
‘Wrought by Rebecca Bridge – Aged 12 years – 1817’.
This sampler is over 200 years old!!
Notice the detailed needlework design of trees, birds and flowers that encircles the poem along with the detailed border. This is a remarkable piece of artwork and what an amazing piece of sewing to still be enjoying its beauty today! The appropriate curly maple frame that holds this sampler measures 24″ wide by 20″ high. This sampler was framed by ‘Fine Arts and Frames – 11547 E. 63rd St. – Raytown, MO 64138 – 356-8196’.
