M208C Cast Iron Bookends Priscilla & John Alden - Bradley & Hubbard
This pair of heavy cast iron bookends of the famous Pilgrims, John Alden and his wife Priscilla Mullins made by Bradley and Hubbard at the early part of the 20th century. Bradley and Hubbard was a company that began in 1852 and continued as an independent concern until the Parker Co. acquired it in 1940. During that time, this Meriden, CT. firm was regarded as one of the preeminent producers of fashionable lamps high quality home accessories that are highly valued and widely collected today.
Immortalized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1858 poem, The Courtship of Miles Standish, John Alden's marriage to Priscilla Mullins was one the earliest romances in the American colonies. Every school child can relate the tale of how Alden hid his feelings for Priscilla when his friend Miles Standish asked him to speak to her on his behalf. Her response’ “Speak for yourself, John” not only netted her a husband of choice, but also became a romantic sobriquet in the English language. Here we have these two fascinating historical figures immortalized in cast iron bookends, forever joined together in a single purpose. Bookends measure 6" height, 3 3/4" wide and 3" depth.
They have acquired a lovely patina over the years. They would be a most welcome addition to any collection. Measures 6" Height, 3 3/4" Width and 2 3/4" Depth.
