G166B Large Silver plated Mirror Plateau Footed
Exceptional 15 1/2" diameter silver plated fancy claw footed mirror plateau. This piece is done with top quality throughout. Notice the fancy engraved half circle designs that decorate the base of this plateau and the fine details in the three wing like claw feet that raise this plateau to a height of 3 1/2". The fancy double beaded circles that surround this plateau are very quick to catch your eye. On the bottom of this plateau there is fancy walnut wood insert that secures this plateau and the three claw feet are secured into this wood. On one of the hinges by the claw feet there is some hallmarks of the silver company and they read, 'H.W. & Co.', with a diamond shaped emblem above the letters. In the reference book, 'THE BOOK OF OLD SILVER (English, American, Foreign)' Author--Seymour B. Wyler and Publisher--Crown Press, Inc. Copyright 1937, on page 201, a makers-mark with 'H W & Co' is indicated to be from the firm of Hy. Wilkinson and Co. This is a maker of Sheffield silver and this is the same signature as is on this plateau. On the seventh un-numbered picture on page past page 116, there is a plateau pictured that has the same feet, and assuming the maker's mark to be correct, this item would be quite early. The plateau pictured in the book (with its epergne) is dated 1810. The mark
found on page 201 indicates the dates of Wilkinson's manufacturing to be 1838-1839. This is the only reference material that we found on this particular marking.
