Q210 Brown-eyed Susan or perhaps Kansas Sunflower Quilt
Brown-eyed Susan or perhaps Kansas Sunflower would be the appropriate name for this quilt. The quilt is 78” x92”and the beautiful quilting is 9 stitches to the 1”. This lovely quilt has never been used or washed, just carefully stored. The handwork is exceptionally nicely done on this quilt. Each appliqué piece has been folded under and the quilter has stitched very even buttonhole stitches around each piece. One of the unusual designs of this quilt is it has trapuntoe petals on the flowers. Each yellow petal is stuffed and this raises the flower petals on the quilt to give an effect of depth to the quilt. The embroidery stitches are also well done. One can easily see this lady was very particular and enjoyed working on her quilt. I’m sure this is a ‘kit’ quilt. Lee Wards was a mail order catalogue company and many homemakers and farm wives would order these quilts from there catalogues or another source was The Capper’s Weekly. The patterns would be already stamped on the fabric. The colors would be chosen and the package would include the cotton batting and everything to assemble the quilt. Many of these quilts would have a wreathe design made out of different varieties of flowers. I’ve seen designs of roses, irises, dogwood, apple blossoms, different leaves, water lilies, poppies and the list goes on and on. Most quilts are beautiful, depending on the skill of each quilter. These companies started this in the late 1920s thru the 1930s and into the early part of the 1940s. I’m sure this quilt is the 1930s. I’m dating it by the fabrics used in making this quilt. The backside of this quilt is a buttercup yellow and is a dyed muslin fabric. This is a lovely quilt that I have owned for twelve years and have decided to offer it for sale. The quilt came out of Marshall County, Iowa.
